Maria Marincowitz and Douglas Pickard have won the 2024 edition of the MUT Miler in South Africa. Both athletes stood on the top step of an entirely South African podium.
Marincowitz surprised the higher ranked Sveta Becker by running the 163 kilometres and climbing the 8.088 in 32 hours, 15 minutes and 29. Becker needed almost half an hour more: 32:43:55. Janet Woodhead, who led the race in the early stages, finished 3 hours behind Marincowitz as third in 35:23:41.

No competition
Pickard had nothing to fear from the competition. With his time of 22 hours, 25 minutes and 26 seconds he was more than 2 hours and 15 minutes faster than runner-up Christiaan Greyling; 24:43:28. It gave Pickard the time to have a good look around him: “The MUT Miler is a mix of every other 100 Miler in the county blended into one. It features high mountains, pristine fynbos, incredible indigenous forests, river crossings, mud, and even a stretch on the beach. It’s tough, but beautiful.”
Greyling had in his turn nothing to worry, as Brandon Hulley was no competition for his second place. Hulley finished in 26:10:17. As far as there was a battle going on, it was for fourth place, with four athletes finishing within 12 minutes of each other. In the end it was Gabriel Kriel who was best of the rest with a time of 28:33:20.
